Why Buying a Domain Name is Important
So just why is buying a domain name important for your home based business? There are a few reasons but the most important is that you look professional.
It gives you a web presence that as long as you own the domain name, no one can take away from you. And if your domain name is short and/or memorable, it’s an easy way for people to find you on the internet.
Looking Professional: Part of Your Business Success
I’ll bet you’ve seen lots of web addresses that look like this: https://join.zenzuu.com/makemoneyeffortlessly
.
Now if you were trying to tell this to someone, to get them to go to your page, what are the chances that they would remember all that? Or type it all in correctly? Be honest — the chances are not all that great.
Now take a look at an example of having a domain name does: www.davidnettles.info. Both addresses go to the same place, but which web address is easier to remember?
Buying a Domain Name: Where Can You Do It?
There are hundreds of places on the internet where buying domain names is quick and easy. But beware — not all domain names are priced the same!
For example, a place called Network Solutions (which at one time was the only place you could buy domain names) may charge over twice as much for the same name as other services. And domain services you get free with other registrars cost extra money at Network Solutions. So, this registrar is not the best value for your dollar.
On the other hand, domain name registrars (places that register a domain name for you) like BlueHost give quality service at low prices — with no extra hidden charges! I personally think that BlueHost is great, too (at BlueHost you get a free domain with $6.95 hosting package…but that’s another topic).
How to Get a Domain Name
After going to one of the domain registrars, actually registering a domain name is easy; the hard part is finding one that’s available! Here’s a hint: use your name. So if your name was Lucy Abraham, you’d type in lucyabraham and see if it was available. If it is — great! If it isn’t, try again, maybe lucy-abraham is available.
Once you’ve selected one or more domain names you want to use, just follow the instructions to buy the names. Oh, and all you need to do is buy the name itself — you don’t need private registration or any bells or whistles.
Once you’ve bought your name, you’ll get information on how to log in and forward your new name to your chosen web address or website.
.Com, .Net, .Info — What’s Best?
If the name you want is available in .com or .net, grab them! These are the two most widely-recognized and respected domain name extensions.
If .info is available, you can try for it as well, especially if you think it will be a high-competition name.
Don’t bother with any of the others, like .biz, .name, .tv, etc. unless you have a very specific reason for wanting them. They aren’t as easy to remember, nor are they as respected.
One other note: if you live in the UK, Canada, Australia, etc., and you plan to market your business within your own country, try for a .uk, .ca or .au extension to your domain name.
