Making money through self-employment can be ideal for the baby boomers out there. And actually, it can be an excellent idea for anyone who wants to cut the ties to a j-o-b and be their own boss.

Now this sounds kind of silly until you think about it. But are you the kind of person who can take an idea and run with it…or do you need everything laid out in advance?
I’ll be really honest — some people are not cut out to be their own boss. If you can’t work without explicit instructions every step of the way, self-employment may not be for you.

However, can you stick with a necessary task until it’s done, no matter how boring? If not, think twice about leaving your job for self-employment.
There are times that you’ll need to get things done that you don’t like. Things like doing paperwork, paying taxes and such. If you don’t do it, the task won’t get done and you may find yourself in hot water.
Self-employment isn’t only doing the fun stuff (it’s just more of the fun stuff than the boring).

If you really want to put and end to the rat race and want a home job to earn an income, you need to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses against potential businesses. Don’t let pride get in the way — everyone has weaknesses, things they don’t do as well as others. Be honest with yourself and you can find a good match for your self-employment.
The benefits of leaving the rat race and making money through self-employment can be things like:
- Getting rid of a long commute. Not to mention saving money because you don’t have to commute!
- Choosing your own working hours. You may not be a 9-to-5 person — perhaps you do your best work at night? Here’s a chance to do your best work when it’s your best time.
- Flexible hours. Sure, you may still have to put in quite a few hours, but you can be flexible. Need to attend your child or grandchild’s soccer game? Take the time to do it! It’s the first day of Spring? Get out and enjoy it.
It’s your job, and you’re the boss. As long as you can meet your commitments, you can take off whatever time you need.
Making Money Through Self-Employment — Finding a Good Match
Finding a work-from-home job where you are self-employed is the hardest part. What is a good match for you?

So is it possible to make money with an internet affiliate program? If so, how can you do it?
For that matter, what exactly is an internet affiliate program? You’ve heard it talked about and you kind of have an idea. But what is it really and how does it work so that you can make money with it?
Affiliate Program 101
An affiliate program is where you refer someone to something, and if they buy it, you get a commission. Simple enough, right?
Sales people have been doing this for years and years, just in a different way. A sales rep is referring his or her product line to a potential buyer. If the sale goes through, the rep will get a commission for it.
An affiliate program works the same basic way, but with a few differences. With an internet affiliate program you are not an employee. You can walk away from it at any time. On the flip side, you don’t get a commission until you sell something.
But the internet makes it a whole lot easier.
What Makes a Good Program?
There are lots and lots of internet affiliate programs out there. Some are good, some are bad and some are so-so. But just what makes a good program? What should you expect? Here’s a list of questions when considering a program:
How often does the program pay? There are all kinds of time frames, from once a week to once a 
quarter. The average program pays once a month. The next most often is once every two weeks. (I personally don’t like for a company to hold onto my money for 3 months at a time.)
What’s the minimum amount to earn a payment? Some affiliate programs will pay out at just $10, while others will wait for $250 before handing your money over to you. The average is $50, with $100 as the next most common amount. Some companies will allow you to specify the minimum — usually not less than $25 though.
Do I have to pay to be an affiliate? You shouldn’t have to — there are plenty of programs out there where you can make money with an internet affiliate program for free. Occasionally you might see a program than has a very nominal fee, usually to cover the cost of a “back office”. If the product is good and the sales potential is great, then you may want to consider one. In the beginning, though, you may as well start out with the free ones.
Do I need to have a website? Many times the company will provide you with your own web page at no cost. You can then refer people to that web page, so they can buy it from there. Some people do create their own website for marketing their affiliate businesses, but that’s optional.
How much of a commission do I get? I’ve seen everything from 5 cents to $150 — it all depends on the program. Obviously, low price items won’t pay out very much; you’d have to make it up on volume. Higher-priced items may pay more, but they are less of an impulse buy. Each program varies.
How do I get paid? Some affiliate programs send you checks, some do direct deposit and some do PayPal. It varies from company to company.

The secret here is that the free book also promotes another ebook (with more detailed information). Once someone buys the book that’s for sale you get a very nice commission. Pays twice a month.
Obviously there are a lot more available on the internet, but these are a few of the good, reliable ones to get you started with your very own internet affiliate business.
