Creating a Blog for Profit
Creating a blog is fairly easy, as you saw on the how to make money blogging page. What’s harder is picking the topic you want to write on.
Choosing a topic doesn’t seem hard at first; for example, write about your business. But if ten thousand people are also writing about the same business…you’re one of many. How can you stand out from the crowd, and get your audience to notice you?
How to Start a Blog: Choose Your Theme Wisely
There are an unlimited number of subjects for you to pick to blog about. Sometimes it is best to start with something you are familiar with. This way it would be easier to come up with fresh new information to post.
Let’s take dieting as an example. It’s something that many people want to know about, so there is a large potential audience. Unfortunately, there is also a very large supply of dieting blogs! So how can you stand out in this crowd?
Niche Down Your Topic
Continuing with the dieting example, maybe you want to target a specific audience — baby boomers for example. There are a whole lot fewer blogs dedicated to weight loss for baby boomers than for dieting in general.
Hmmm, but there are still a lot of dieting blogs that cover the over 40 crowd. So maybe you want to target people who are over 40 pounds overweight? What are their special needs and problems?
You see where I’m going with this? The more specific your audience, the better chance you have of being found by them.
(And if you want to see a blog that uses this example, check out the blog for Losing Weight Over 40.)
Creating a Blog to be Profitable
Creating a blog is easier once you have your target audience in mind. And it’s also more profitable! And just why is that?
When you have targeted traffic to your blog, several things happen. First, if you use AdSense or YPN on your blog, the advertisements become more targeted as well. The better the ads match your audience, the more likely they will click on them.
Creating a blog that is targeted also means that if you’re selling affiliate (or your own) goods, there is a better chance that the right people will want to buy what you have to sell. Using the dieting example again, the diet products aimed at the 20-something crowd won’t likely be a winner with the over 40 crowd.

Self-Employment
Making Money & Self-Employment — Can You Do It?
Making money through self-employment can be ideal for the baby boomers out there. And actually, it can be an excellent idea for anyone who wants to cut the ties to a j-o-b and be their own boss.
But before you take the plunge full-time, there are some things to think about first. Do you have what it takes to be self-employed?
Can You Work Without Supervision?
Now this sounds kind of silly until you think about it. But are you the kind of person who can take an idea and run with it…or do you need everything laid out in advance?
I’ll be really honest — some people are not cut out to be their own boss. As far as making money through self-employment goes, you have to be able to come up with ideas and plans when circumstances change. If you can’t work without explicit instructions every step of the way, self-employment may not be for you.
Can You Work Without Supervision – Part Two
OK, so you can be flexible and change gears when needed – excellent! That’s a great first step.
However, can you stick with a necessary task until it’s done, no matter how boring? If not, think twice about leaving your job for self-employment.
There are times that you’ll need to get things done that you don’t like. Things like doing paperwork, paying taxes and such. If you don’t do it, the task won’t get done and you may find yourself in hot water.
Self-employment isn’t only doing the fun stuff (it’s just more of the fun stuff than the boring).
Calling the Rat Race Quits
If you really want to put and end to the rat race and want a home job to earn an income, you need to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses against potential businesses. Don’t let pride get in the way — everyone has weaknesses, things they don’t do as well as others. Be honest with yourself and you can find a good match for your self-employment.
The benefits of leaving the rat race and making money through self-employment can be things like:
- Getting rid of a long commute. Not to mention saving money because you don’t have to commute!
- Choosing your own working hours. You may not be a 9-to-5 person — perhaps you do your best work at night? Here’s a chance to do your best work when it’s your best time.
- Flexible hours. Sure, you may still have to put in quite a few hours, but you can be flexible. Need to attend your child or grandchild’s soccer game? Take the time to do it! It’s the first day of Spring? Get out and enjoy it.
It’s your job, and you’re the boss. As long as you can meet your commitments, you can take off whatever time you need.
Making Money Through Self-Employment — Finding a Good Match
Finding a work-from-home job where you are self-employed is the hardest part. What is a good match for you?
Are you the shy type, but are great with behind-the-scenes work? Maybe an internet affiliate program would work well for you.
Love talking with people about almost anything? You might enjoy making money effortlessly through network marketing or participating in focus group surveys.

Weeding Out the Scams
Yes, there are tons of self-employment scams out there. Sorry, stuffing envelopes will not make you a millionaire! And if something promises you can earn thousands of dollars practically overnight, you’d probably best run in the other direction.
That being said, there are legitimate opportunities for making money — lots of money — out there. You just need to investigate your new opportunity thoroughly and know what’s needed to make the money you need and/or want.
Make sure your strengths fit with what you will need to do to make earn the income you deserve!
