So is it possible to make money with an internet affiliate program? If so, how can you do it?

For that matter, what exactly is an internet affiliate program? You've heard it talked about and you kind of have an idea. But what is it really and how does it work so that you can make money with it?

Sales people have been doing this for years and years, just in a different way. A sales rep is referring his or her product line to a potential buyer. If the sale goes through, the rep will get a commission for it.

An affiliate program works the same basic way, but with a few differences. With an internet affiliate program you are not an employee. You can walk away from it at any time. On the flip side, you don't get a commission until you sell something.

But the internet makes it a whole lot easier.

What Makes a Good Program?

How often does the program pay? There are all kinds of timeframes, from once a week to once a quarter. The average program pays once a month. The next most often is once every two weeks. (I personally don't like for a company to hold onto my money for 3 months at a time.)

What's the minimum amount to earn a payment? Some affiliate programs will pay out at just $10, while others will wait for $250 before handing your money over to you. The average is $50, with $100 as the next most common amount. Some companies will allow you to specify the minimum -- usually not less than $25 though.

Do I have to pay to be an affiliate? You shouldn't have to -- there are plenty of programs out there where you can make money with an internet affiliate program for free. Occasionally you might see a program than has a very nominal fee, usually to cover a "back office". If the product is good and the sales potential is great, then you may want to consider one. In the beginning, though, you may as well start out with the free ones.

Do I need to have a website? Many times the company will provide you with your own web page at no cost. You can then refer people to that web page, so they can buy it from there. Some people do create their own website for marketing their affiliate businesses, but that's optional.

How much of a commission do I get? I've seen everything from 5 cents to $150 -- it all depends on the program. Obviously, low price items won't pay out very much; you'd have to make it up on volume. Higher-priced items may pay more, but they are less of an impulse buy. Each program varies.

How do I get paid? Some affiliate programs send you checks, some do direct deposit and some do PayPal. It varies from company to company.
