Occasionally you might see a program than has a very nominal fee, usually to cover the cost of a “back office”. If the product is good and the sales potential is great, then you may want to consider one. In the beginning, though, you may as well start out with the free ones.

Do I need to have a website? Many times the company will provide you with your own web page at no cost. You can then refer people to that web page, so they can buy it from there. Some people do create their own website for marketing their affiliate businesses, but that’s optional.

How much of a commission do I get? I’ve seen everything from 5 cents to $150 — it all depends on the program. Obviously, low price items won’t pay out very much; you’d have to make it up on volume. Higher-priced items may pay more, but they are less of an impulse buy. Each program varies.

How do I get paid? Some affiliate programs send you checks, some do direct deposit and some do PayPal. It varies from company to company.
